Aurangzeb Tomb Nagpur News Live Updates: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis speaking on communal tension across Nagpur during the legislative assembly, said, “Only specific houses, establishments were targeted by mob and it looks like a conspiracy. Those who attacked police personnel will not be spared.” The city police imposed strict curfew restrictions, along with invoking Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha, to enforce restrictions starting today (March 18) until further notice. On Monday night, vehicles were torched and police fired tear gas shells at mobs following violence over rumours that a holy book had been desecrated during a demonstration in the city by the right-wing outfits including Bajrang Dal, seeking removal of the tomb of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Khuldabad.


What happened: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) staged protests across various government offices Monday and submitted memorandums for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad. In the memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the VHP stated that Aurangzeb had killed two sons of Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh because they refused to convert, tortured and killed Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and demolished temples in Kashi, Mathura and Somnath.


What did Maharashtra CM Fadnavis say: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said the government is obligated to protect Aurangzeb’s tomb which is a protected site, but it won’t allow attempts to glorify his legacy through “mahima mandan”. “It is unfortunate that the government has to take responsibility for the protection of Aurangzeb’s grave, despite his history of persecution. However, I assure you, if any attempt is made to glorify his legacy through ‘mahima mandan’, it will not succeed,” he said after inaugurating a temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Thane district.
